    • •Thabo Bester has been transferred to the eBongweni Super Maximum Correctional Centre in Kokstad.
    • •Authorities say the move follows security risk assessments and standard correctional procedures.
    • •The transfer comes ahead of continued court proceedings related to Bester’s escape and other charges.

South African authorities have transferred convicted criminal Thabo Bester to the eBongweni Super Maximum Correctional Centre in Kokstad, KwaZulu-Natal, citing security assessments and operational requirements as the state prepares for further court proceedings in one of the country’s most closely watched criminal cases.

The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) has confirmed that Thabo Bester, one of South Africa’s most notorious convicted criminals, has been transferred from Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Centre in Pretoria to the eBongweni Super Maximum Correctional Centre near Kokstad in KwaZulu-Natal. The move places Bester in one of the country’s most secure prison facilities, designed to house inmates considered to pose extreme security risks.

According to the DCS, the transfer followed a comprehensive security risk assessment and forms part of routine inmate management within the correctional system. Officials stressed that high-profile offenders are regularly moved between facilities to ensure the safety of staff, other inmates and the integrity of ongoing legal processes.

Bester has been in state custody since his dramatic re-arrest in 2023, after evading authorities for nearly a year following a brazen escape from the privately run Mangaung Correctional Centre in Bloemfontein. That escape, initially believed to have resulted in his death in a cell fire, later emerged as an elaborate ruse involving a decoy body, triggering a national scandal and intense scrutiny of prison oversight in South Africa.

The eBongweni Super Maximum Correctional Centre is regarded as one of the most secure prisons in the country. It operates under strict conditions, including limited inmate movement, heightened surveillance and tightly controlled access. The facility is reserved for offenders classified as highly dangerous or those whose profiles attract exceptional public and security interest.

Correctional Services officials said the relocation would not interfere with Bester’s constitutional rights. He will continue to have access to legal representation, medical care and communication with approved visitors, subject to the regulations governing super-maximum facilities. The department also indicated that logistical arrangements are in place to ensure his attendance at future court appearances.

Bester is currently facing a raft of additional charges linked to his escape, including fraud, arson, defeating the ends of justice and assisting an inmate to escape. These charges are in addition to his original convictions for rape, murder and robbery, crimes that earned him widespread notoriety and the label of a serial offender who exploited social media to lure victims.

Legal analysts say the transfer underscores the state’s determination to prevent any repeat of the security failures that enabled Bester’s escape in 2022. That incident prompted parliamentary inquiries, internal investigations within the DCS and criminal charges against several individuals accused of facilitating the breakout.

However, the move has also reignited debate around the balance between security imperatives and the rights of accused persons. Defence teams in similar cases have previously argued that housing inmates far from major urban centres and courts can complicate trial preparation, particularly in complex, multi-accused matters.

The transfer to eBongweni also places Bester in the same facility as other high-profile inmates, including alleged organised crime figures, reinforcing the prison’s role as a central hub for managing South Africa’s most dangerous offenders. Authorities argue that concentrating such inmates in specialised facilities enhances control and reduces systemic risk.

For the public, Bester’s movement between prisons remains a focal point of a case that has exposed deep flaws in correctional management and sparked broader conversations about accountability, corruption and reform within the criminal justice system. The case continues to attract intense media attention, reflecting its symbolic weight in a country grappling with high crime and institutional trust deficits.

As court proceedings continue, officials maintain that security considerations will remain paramount. Whether the transfer to eBongweni marks the final chapter in Bester’s custodial journey, or merely another step in a protracted legal saga, will depend on the outcomes of the cases still before the courts.
