OpenAI has released a dedicated desktop version of its Codex tool, aiming to give software developers greater control over how artificial intelligence assists with writing, reviewing and managing code.
The new Codex app is designed to act as a central workspace where developers can assign tasks to multiple AI agents, monitor their progress and review proposed code changes before applying them. OpenAI said the tool is intended to support longer-running and more complex development work than is typically handled through chat-based interfaces.
Unlike traditional code editors, the app separates work into isolated environments, allowing different agents to operate in parallel without affecting the main codebase. Developers can inspect file changes, compare versions and selectively merge updates, maintaining oversight of how AI-generated code is incorporated into projects.
The application also introduces reusable "skills" that bundle instructions, scripts and workflows. These can be applied to tasks such as documentation, testing, deployment and issue management, reflecting a broader push to move AI tools beyond simple code generation and toward end-to-end development support.
OpenAI said Codex includes automation features that allow agents to perform scheduled or background tasks, with results routed back to users for review. The company emphasised that the system operates in sandboxed environments and requires explicit permission for actions such as external network access.
The release comes as competition intensifies among companies offering AI-assisted programming tools. Developers have increasingly adopted such systems to speed up routine work, though industry analysts say human oversight remains critical, particularly for large or security-sensitive projects.
The Codex app is initially available on macOS, with versions for Windows and Linux planned. Access is tied to ChatGPT accounts, including paid subscriptions for professional and enterprise users, while limited access is also being offered to free users during the launch period.
OpenAI said usage of Codex has grown steadily in recent months as AI coding tools become more deeply embedded in development workflows. The company plans further updates to improve performance and expand platform support, as it seeks to strengthen its position in a fast-moving and increasingly crowded market.
