A close ally of junta leader General Assimi Goïta, he played a central role in both the 2020 and 2021 coups that brought the military to power. He was also the main architect of Mali’s security partnership with Russia and the Wagner Group (now Africa Corps).
How the Attack Unfolded
According to multiple reports, the attackers launched simultaneous strikes on several high-value targets, including military barracks in Bamako, Kati, Sévaré, Mopti, Gao and Kidal. Camara’s home in Kati was hit by a powerful explosion — believed to be a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED). He was killed in the blast.
JNIM quickly claimed responsibility, stating the operation was carried out in coordination with Tuareg separatist groups. This level of coordination between jihadists and rebels is relatively rare and signals a dangerous new phase in the Sahel conflict.

Born in Kati in 1979, Camara rose through the ranks of the Malian army and became a key member of the junta. As Defence Minister, he oversaw the controversial decision to expel French forces and bring in Russian mercenaries. He made multiple trips to Moscow to strengthen military ties and was personally sanctioned by the US Treasury in 2023 for his role in alleged human rights abuses linked to Wagner operations.

Camara’s death is a major symbolic and operational blow to the junta. He was not only the Defence Minister but also one of the regime’s most hardline and influential figures. The attack exposes serious vulnerabilities in the junta’s security apparatus, even in the heavily guarded Kati garrison.
