The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a strong warning for severe weather conditions, including heavy rainfall, flooding, strong winds and possible snow, expected to affect large parts of the country from Monday 5 May to Thursday 7 May 2026.

The South African Weather Service has issued an extreme weather warning for a powerful cut-off low-pressure system expected to bring heavy rain, flooding, strong winds and possible snow to large parts of the country from Monday 5 May to Thursday 7 May 2026.

Key Warnings Issued

• Heavy rainfall of 100–200mm is possible in some areas, increasing the risk of widespread flooding of roads, low-lying settlements and bridges.

• Disruptive snowfall is forecast for high-lying areas of the Western Cape and parts of the Eastern Cape.

• Strong to gale-force winds are expected along the coast, with damaging waves and possible storm surges.

• Severe thunderstorms with hail and damaging winds are likely over parts of the interior.

Areas Most at Risk

The system is expected to affect the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Northern Cape, Free State, North West, Mpumalanga and parts of KwaZulu-Natal. High-risk areas include the Garden Route, Central Karoo, and high-lying regions where snow and flooding could cause major disruptions.

Safety Advice from SAWS

The Weather Service urges residents to:

• Avoid low-lying areas and flooded roads

• Secure loose objects and prepare for possible power outages

• Take extra care when driving, especially high-sided vehicles

• Stay informed through official channels and share warnings with others

Why This System is Dangerous

Cut-off lows are known for bringing prolonged, intense rainfall and sudden weather changes. Combined with already saturated soils from recent rains, this system poses a high risk of flooding and dangerous driving conditions.

Meteorologists are calling this a multi-day event that could cause significant disruption to daily life, travel and agriculture.
